Many thanks for that latest advice on using nomodeset, and it seems to be booting OK now, although the pages are still much bigger than the screen and so far I haven't found a way to make them fit (unable to even see the Quit button as it's off the screen, so have to use "sudo halt" to shutdown).
Anyway, I think you are right in that the graphics card on my old machine just can't handle, it and the time has come to get a new PC with a more up to date spec.
The good news is that the Linux Mint 20 I installed on my sons PC is working great, so we are both really pleased, and with that being the main reason for my original post, I consider that is "problem solved".
Once again, thank you for all your help, there is no way I could have done it without your expert guidance, very much appreciated, thank you.
Before you start playing with your new PC, make sure that you put GParted (gparted-live-1.1.0-6-amd64.iso) on a USB flash drive using either Etcher (or Rufus on Windows).
It is useful to partition the new blank drive before you install LM20. In any event it is always handy to have GParted available.
If you have not already replaced your old PC, here is some information for you.
I have recently installed Linux Mint 20 on a new PC for a friend whose old computer was tired and slow.
This is the one my friend purchased (the same Ebuyer one I recommended to you in post #28).
Xenta MT Core i3-10100 10th Gen 8GB RAM 240GB SSD Desktop PC (no operating system) £319.98: https://www.ebuyer.com/991718-xenta-...op-pc-xr-d5175
It has 8GB of RAM and an Intel i3-10100 CPU rated at 8990. It has Intel UHD graphics 630 and Intel wifi.
Everything is recognised in Linux Mint 20 MATE and the PC runs fast and quiet.
I can highly recommend it.
My friend commented:
“Once again thank you very much for getting me going again with my new computer.
Enjoying the much faster speed too!”

Really pleased you have got in touch as after all your help I wanted to give you an update, but thought I would not be able to make contact once the thread is marked as "solved".
How strange that your friend had exactly the same problem as me with an old, tired and slow PC, and great that with your help he is now so pleased with the performance of his new machine.
I had never heard of ebuyer, but followed the link you sent with the intention of buying the PC you recommended, then on the same page I noticed they had this other model on offer:
As you had advised the graphics was the main cause of problems on my old PC, I checked that both models had the same Intel UHD graphics 630 installed, then figured that upgrading from my old 2GB RAM to 8GB would be brilliant, so 16GB RAM should be even better, and as both machines were the same make, had the same wi-fi and 240GB SSD, also the Intel processors you recommended, I bought this one on 30 October.
It was delivered the next day and I installed Linux Mint 20 from the USB with no problems. It works like a dream, so fast and quiet, the difference from my old machine is dramatic and I'm absolutely delighted with the performance, so once again, thank you so much for your help and recommendations.
