Clean install - grub prompt
 

I have done a clean instal of Sus 9.1l on an Acer PIII. I have fdisk the harddrive with "fdisk /mbr". There is not other operating system on that drive. The drive is formatted as follows: hda1 is a 500MB swap, and hda2 is a 3.5GB reiser.

On the first reboot of the installation I get the "grub" prompt.

From this prompt how do I complete the installation and get into the GUI?

PS. I have seen other grub prompt problems with, but with dual boot (which is why after about 7 reinstalls I did "fdisk /mbr"
Also if my problem was addressed elsewhere in this forum - please forgive me.

did you make a boot floppy when stuff like that happins you can boot with a floppy. you can find more info on grub on google. Im not gonna type up a book on the 15,000 ways you can boot your distro when you mess up your MBR

If the GRUB prompt is coming up with no menu, it means that GRUB can't find the menu script at /boot/menu.lst. You could get a boot disk and try to create the script yourself with a text editor (details of how can be found at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html ) or you could try my heavy handed approach and do a complete reinstall (I do it without formatting, but since you're on a clean install there's no harm in formatting either). If you didn't notice, SuSE 9.1's installer does allow easy modification of the GRUB config. By default it has just linux and failsafe, it could be that you deleted that by accident during installation. Leave them there if you reinstall and see how that works.

I managed to boot the system with the CD. I'm still working on getting it to self boot.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS for your PC. I have found this helps a lot when using GRUB.

I'd only recommend re-flashing your BIOS ROM though as a last resort. If it goes wrong it's not easy to recover.

I already flashed the bios. Will be doing a installl just now.

Ok the reinstall didn't work.

at grub I tried the following:

grub> kerenel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz (/dev/hda2, root=/dev/hda2)

and I get:

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS.

HA! I set the BIOS to Auto detect the HD and Volla!
