claw mail problems not receiving mail

Hi all
I have searched the web and forums and unable to resolve issues receiving mail, being a newbie to the line command and Linux some of it is above my skill set at this time.

I have installed Claw mail, on Debian 8 / xfce. with Ice weasel ( DuckDuck Go)
when I try to "Get Mail" I receive the following error msg:

* Account 'slatfam1@sympatico.ca': Connecting to POP3 server: pophm.sympatico.ca:995...
[09:09:50] POP3< +OK SPOP3 server ready.
[09:09:50] POP3> USER b1cbkr48
[09:09:50] POP3< +OK please send PASS command
[09:09:50] POP3> PASS ********
[09:09:50] POP3< -ERR invalid user name or password.
*** error occurred on authentication
*** Authentication failed.

I have verified the user and password to be correct, it is an existing e-mail address that is associated with outlook.
Sending does not work either:
The only resolve at this point is to delete and use another mail prog.( windows user mentality )
Any input would be appreciated ,

Thanks

Looks like your password has to be encrypted. Port 995 @ sympatico.ca is a secure port. You may be sending the password in clear text.
Try setting up claws with SSL support.

Have you got SSL enabled? Have you looked at http://support.bell.ca/Internet/Emai...=3#displayStep

Go Claws-Mail>Configuration>Preferences for Current Account>SSL and look at your settings.

Hi...

Are all the other settings correct? I found this page that might help with that. Also, can this problem be duplicated on another client, such as Thunderbird?

Regards...

Thanks for the replies.
I checked the bell link and applied the info :

Unsupported email software
If your email software is not listed, you can attempt to set it up yourself using the support options offered by your software manufacturer.

You’ll need your Bell Mail email address and password, plus one of the following server settings. We recommend using IMAP.

IMAP:

Incoming mail server (IMAP):
IMAP Server: imap.bell.net
Port: 993
SSL required: Yes (Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) or Use SSL.)

Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
Port: 25 (or 587 if port 25 does not work)
Authentication required: Yes
TLS/SSL required: Yes (Select STARTTLS or TLS if available, if not, select SSL.)

POP:

Incoming mail server (POP):
POP Server: pophm.sympatico.ca
Port: 995
SSL required: Yes (Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) or Use SSL.)

Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
Port: 25 (or 587 if port 25 does not work)
Authentication required: Yes
TLS/SSL required: Yes (Select STARTTLS or TLS if available, if not, select SSL).

when I use the values for IMAP :
* Account 'slatfam1@sympatico.ca': Connecting to POP3 server: imap.bell.net:993...
[13:11:58] POP3< * OK IMAP4 server (InterMail vM.9.00.018.00 201-2473-151) ready Sat, 2 Jan 2016 13:11:57 -0500 (EST)
*** Error occurred while processing mail.

When I use POP values :
* Account 'slatfam1@sympatico.ca': Connecting to POP3 server: pophm.sympatico.ca:995...
[13:16:27] POP3< +OK SPOP3 server ready.
[13:16:27] POP3> USER b1cbkr48
[13:16:27] POP3< +OK please send PASS command
[13:16:27] POP3> PASS ********
[13:16:27] POP3< -ERR invalid user name or password.
*** error occurred on authentication
*** Authentication failed.

SSl config in claws is set:
POP- use ssl for POP
SMTP- use start ls

I have not tried other mail apps, yet!

Thanks for any input

Hi...

I guess this precludes calling Bell Canada for assistance.

Good guess. And when posting, please try to follow the LQ Rules: "Do not post if you do not have anything constructive to say in the post." The link you posted previously, duplicated EXACTLY what was posted by arochester before.

OP, have you tried deleting your account in Claws, and clicking the "Auto Configure" button?? Claws can query the server, and try to select things based on what the server returns. Otherwise, try to modify your settings as such:

Server section
  • Server for receiving: imap.bell.net
  • SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
  • User ID: Your address (*NOTE* your user ID may (or MAY NOT) be your entire address..check with Bell)
  • Password: Your password
Receive section
  • Authentication method: LOGIN
Send section
  • SMTP Authentication: Enable this
  • User ID: Your address (see previous note)
  • Password: Your password
SSL section
  • Use SSL for IMAP4 connection: Enable this
  • Don't use SSL (under SMTP section): Enable this
Advanced section
  • SMTP Port: 465
  • IMAP Port: 993

I disagree. Not everything I said was an exact duplicate. Moreover, at the time I saw the original post, no answers were posted. After I had spent some time researching and had posted my answer, others, including arochester, had already posted theirs.

Sorry, just doesn't add up; there were two posts before yours, and you posted the exact same link that arochester posted.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the input TBOne.

Auto configure- Fails (with everything deleted)

Tried your setup suggestions & variations of such and that of sympatico:
and all i get is the same errors or it times out

* Account 'slatfam1@sympatico.ca': Connecting to POP3 server: imap.bell.net:995...
*** imap.bell.net:995: connection failed (Connection timed out).

As frustration is now setting in, should I delete and start anew ?

How do I delete claw ?
Any suggestions on somthing more suitable for Debian 8 / xfce ?

Thanks to all

You shouldn't really have to delete Claws...chances are, your hard drive will have plenty of space for it, and for now, leaving it there won't hurt anything. There are several other mail clients, such as Evolution (more for Gnome), kmail (KDE), and Thunderbird (fairly independent). If I were you, I'd try Thunderbird first.

Hi...

Thunderbird is a good client, however, you might want to confirm this is an issue with your provider, not the program, before you delete it.

I had a similar situation happen to me a while back with my provider. If I remember correctly, they had some kind of outage with their mail servers and when they brought them back up, I no longer could get my mail using Windows Mail on my copy of Vista. I called them twice for help but nothing they suggested worked. However, Thunderbird worked, so I started using that.

Regards...

Thanks for the reply

I'm using a acer D255E netbook... thats why I was wondering about deleting claw.

for now I'm going to access the email via book mark on iceweasel.
My introduction to Linux is going to be a steep one, thats why the netbook, Desktop is still Win 8.

Thanks again for your knowledge & time
