cirrus logic gd5465 laguna (rev 02) card Vector Linux 7

Greetings all!

Today I chose to keep an old Dell Dimension 4100 (Pentium III, 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM) instead of scrapping it. It had Windows Vista running, but slowly. I figured VectorLinux Lite 7 would hum on it, and I was able to install it from a DVD.

However, when I run startx, the display is pretty bad. I was wondering if there is a way to configure VL7 to work with the video card?

Here is my output from lspci:

vga compatible controller cirrus logic gd 5465 laguna (rev 02).

Thanks in advance from a Linux/VectorLinux newbie!

You don't specify what you mean with 'the display is pretty bad'. Please explain.

Otherwise the Cirrus logic cards are quit old. The card you mention is a SVGA card, which means its maximum resolution is 1024*768.

Cheers

Thanks for responding. What I meant was that the display was ugly and minimal. After doing some reading, I realized my install defaulted to the JVM desktop.

I tried changing to LXDE, but the screen went crazy and I had to reboot and just run JVM. I'm hoping I can make some adjustments and get a better looking desktop.

I created a VL virtual machine on my laptop with 256 MB RAM, and it seems to have defaulted to LXDE. My Dell Dimension has 512 MB and it looks like when VL boots that it sees the card.
