chown


Im trying to gain ownership of an sql file. I have administrative privelages in my account. I try to run andy@abapc79:~/Desktop$ chown andy ext.sql but when I try to chaqnge the file permissions it still tells me im no the owner even though the command does not give back any error message

what does "administrative privelages" mean? Your user won't be able to do squat otuisde of their won files, and never should be able to by design, run it as root, possibly via sudo.

First of all, post the output of:

Code:
ls -l | grep ext.sql
And make sure it's wrapped in the code tags just like I did above.

Some admin rights might not be enough (are you talking about sudo?). You might have to change the permissions as root.

its saying I have ownership but when I go into right click properties permissions it says I dont :-/
-rwxrwxrwx 1 andy andy 134590464 May 25 10:10 ext.sql I have run it as sudo (sorry I should have said that)

what is "it"?? Unless you have a problem specifically with GUI tools, try to only refer to standard terminal based operations that are clear, copy/pasteable and standard across most distros

from the ls, you own that file, end of story.

According to the attached im not the owner even though in the command line it says I am :-/

Ive got it sorted, I changed the ownership to root and then back again and it worked. Not sure what happened the first time :-/
