Choosing a Wireless Networking Card

Ok.. So, maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit by posting this ( I checked the "similar threads thing though..) But essentially, here's my problem:

I've been doing my research on a mobile phone, as I don't have internet yet. Its an S3, so it's great, but I've been doing it for about 5 hours now. I need a PCIe (I've found three, so far (Using Madwifi-copmpatability.org). and I'm having no luck anywhere else. I see tons of PCI's and even a good bit of MiniPCIes but.. -sigh- I'm totally new to this and just feel completely out of my league. I want one with data monitoring and injection capabilities, and I'm trying to get a pretty good one, as I'd love to just take out my current one (I'm currently dual booting BT5 with Win.7, my current Wireless Networking Card isn't even registering, but I'm gonna look for a patch when I get internet access) Money isn't Completely an issue (Im willing to shell around a hundred bucks) But I have no clue where to start looking... sorry If I'm rambling, but trying to get as much usefull information as possible... Any help would be awsome. I'm not looking for a "get this" so much as a "check this link out. Its got some good PCIe info" because, again, I've found four in the last five hours.

Wait, I really dont get the question...unless I'm the one that's completely new at this...
You need wireless...whi not get a USB wireless dongle? Unless (again) I did'nt understand the question, which is the reason why I'm doing this repy :)

Okay, let's go one hop at a time, you mention PCIe, so, I'm thinking: desktop PC, am I right? So, where does the phone tie in?

So, willing to extend a helping hand, and always looking at things the lateral way :)

Ok, yeah its a desktop (I'm using my phone for internet, was just suuuupperrr frustrated because of that, not really relevant..) As for the USB, I live with roommates, and they're... intrusive. I don't really want them being able to "borrow" my card, yano? Thats why I'm trying to find a PCIe (thanks for response btw, sorry was working all day, so I'm only just able to respond :P )

...no problem...

Well, your particular "challenge" does need a novel approach: unplug the USB dongle after you're done...that way you're given an extra bonus: your roommates cannot surf on your box while you're not around...
If possible (I dont know if that does exist - just a thought) you could try to find something to combine the dongle with your...say...carkeys...

Dongles come in various sizes and are not really that hard to put away. The one I use has the size of half a thumb (no kidding) and has a protective cap to click on as you have it unplugged...

But...I'll look around on my side of the planet it that exists...maybe a postal delivery is possible :)
If there is some result, I'll post the URL here... :)

Thanks. :) My rooms as organized as Lindsey Lohans medical cabinet, so I'd really rather it be stationary, but if I gotta go with a USB one, then I guess I'll start doing research for that, but yeah, if you see something on your side I'd really love a link :)

Nah, you wont need to get a USB wireless adapter.

Neat hint- dont worry so much about the interface (e.g. USB, PCI, PCIe), concetrate on the chipset (e.g. Realtek RTL8188SU).

I beleive that atheros is the most 'open source friendly' manufacturer of wireless networking adapters. As far as I know anyway. I have no idea if they will do data monitoring and injection, maybe someone else would know. As you can tell I'm hardly a wireless expert. ;)

Yeah, but it has to be a PCIe..? It wont fit in my computer unless it is. The thing connects straight to the Hard Drive, I wouldn't have the slightest clue about getting a PCI into it, so the first step is finding out which Cards are compatible with my PC, then checking into the chips. I've been looking into alot of Atheros, and most of the stuff I've been searching is on Linux-based forums, so they all show wither its out-of-the-box ready, or where to get a patch for the driver, if necessary. Most even showed what functions they where capable of.. the problem is, the best chip in the world is useless if it doesn't go into my PC... unless I'm seriously missing something, which is VERY likely, because Lord knows I haven't the slightest clue at this point.

However, much thx for the links, gonna check and see what funtions they preform. I currently have a RealTek something or another but I know it doesn't have anything outside of Reading functionality (it needs drivers just to work on Linux)

Pros: It works with Windows 7 and GNU/Linux out of the box without really any fuss; I simply physically installed the card and everything just worked on reboot (both in Linux and Windows). The internal WLAN chipset is an Atheros AR9285, which has pretty good open source Linux drivers that ship with almost every Linux distribution these days. More info on the driver is at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k.

That is why I linked to a PCIe network card.

If figuring out what the chipset does what you want it to, then loking for a wireless adapter with that chipset is too hard, there is only one other easy option. Go to the websites/stores you have access to, finding out what PCIe network cards are avaible and then figuring out which one to get.
