I've tried a few netbook distros and from what I've experienced Ubuntu Netbook Remix had quite good power management.

Ubuntu is a great choice for beginners (it was MY first distro!)
Just a heads-up that Ubuntu Network Remix no longer exists as a separate entity--now it's just "regular" Ubuntu whether you use a desktop, laptop, or netbook.

Honorable mention to Mint; I am not very experienced with it, but it has a great reputation for beginners too. :)

No Ubuntu Netbook Remix version is stil supported. The last version to use that name was 9.10, end of life for 9.10 was 2011-04-30.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix was renamed Ubuntu Netbook Edition for 10.04, kept the same name for 11.10, and has been discontinued for 11.04 onward.

That thread is about the AMD fusion CPUs, which is a very different situation to the intel atom CPU the OP is using.

Yeah, I forgot about it. When I used it, it still existed as a remix.

Excellent suggestion. Thanks for link.

I have dual boot Xubuntu 11.04 and MW 7 starter.
In MW 7 starter battery life is 6 hours, Xubuntu 11.04 is 4 hours.

My Dell Mini 9 runs quite well on Ubuntu.

Before putting Linux on the box, check whether it has Broadcom wirelss (Dell seems to be a Broadcom shop). If so, read up on how to get Broadcom wireless working. Searching LQ for "Linux Broadcom wireless" should turn up all the information you need.

It's not hard, but it's not completely automatic.

Probably Ubuntu + Fluxbox.
Which is lighter GUI: Xfce or Fluxbox?

I do not understand for wireless.
My wireless work fine, when not using internet wireless is off.

Flux has a lot less graphically. I had both on one of my distro's ... and kept Xfce, but I use fluxbox way more ... somethings are a bit harder to set up in it (such as getting it to start wireless especially if you use another desktop with it-one line in the config fixed this for me), but it is nice. Comes with a few different 'styles/themes', and I am about 95% sure it is the lighter one.

A lot of that would be due to the power regressions in the 2.6.35+ kernels.

If you want to get absolute maximum battery life, you'll want a disro that is using an earlier kernel than 2.6.35.

Broker824 06-29-2011 04:29 AM

Which Linux distribution with earlier kernel 2.6.35 suggest?

Kernel now is 2.6.38-8-generic.
How to adjust kernel 2.6.38 for longer battery life.
Is that possible?

PS
Sorry, my English is very bad. I use Google Translation.

Best linux distro for your system

Broker824 06-29-2011 04:47 AM

Sorry, openSUSE 11.4 or earlier versions.
Because kernel to openSUSE 11.04 is version 2.6.37.

Broker824 06-30-2011 03:32 AM

Ok. I am going to install Puppy Linux.
I'll try Puppy versions 4.3, 5.1, 5.2 and 5.2.5.
I will put the results.

Thank you very much for your help.:hattip:
