Checksum did not match
 

Hello,

Earlier today I decided that I was going to try Fedora Core 3. I have downloaded all the ISO files twice by now from two different sources (one as a torrent, and the other from an FTP) and with both of them the checksum does not match.

Nonetheless I burned them onto a CD-RW anyway and tried to install them. But also when the CDs are checked by the FC3 installation program they also FAIL.

Regardless of this, I still continued the installation, and halfway throughout the installation it told me that a fatal error occured and that the installation had to be stopped.

Does anyone know why the checksum keeps on messing up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm...perhaps you are extremely unlucky, in which case it might not hurt to try it one more time from a (different?) mirror geographically closest to your location. Or perhaps it is something more...sinister...

When the checksum doesn't match, there is no need to go any further because it is not going to work as you found out the hard way!!! I hope you are using CD-RW so you can reuse those CDs again... Did you any chance use IE to download those iso files??? IE has been known from time to time to corrupt an ISO image so I recommand you use Firefox which is much faster and better than IE! Otherwise, just use an old fashion ftp command from the prompt then...

Well, I downloaded them twice. Once using the Azureus Bit Torrent client, and once using Download Accelerator Plus.

In each case, all of the files were corrupt. For example, not just FC3-i386-disc1.iso was corrupt, but also disc 2,3, and 4. HMMM... If this is a coincidence then then it must be a very big coincidence, because you wouldnt expect all of the files to be corrupt..

Anyone else have any ideas?

timmytytim, if i would download a big file (iso, game demo, etc.) with linux it would corrupt and the MD5 would be trashed. the download would also get cut off from the site alot. so i hate to say this but, if i download with windows and firefox everything would be cool, a primo MD5. also, if i would change "workspace" in the middle of a download it seemed to cause it too. this is not a specific distro but seemed to be any and it was random. go figure. i agree with the firefox vs IE theory. go firefox all the freakin' way...:cry:

Dunno about non-matching checksums as I have always found them a pretty reliable test for integrity. However, I did have the experience with the FC3 media check failing CDs - particularly CD 3 of the set, even though I burnt it several times using different platforms/burners. However, CD 3 seems to be working fine dispite its "failed" status.
