checking versions of apps

I am trying to debug problems on my Debian 3.0r1 PC and am having problems getting version info on my installed app's.

So, is there a way to 1) See every application that is currently installed on my machine. 2) Get the versions of each of those app's

Although I am not sure that this works with Debian, in RedHat I would do a:

‘rpm –qa’

To list all of my packages and their version. If you are looking for a specific item you can of course pipe this to grep, or to simply:

‘rpm –q unzip’

To query the version of the unzip package.

I hope that this helps.

one easy way is to try synaptic, a great app that lists all installed and uninstalled packages, versions, etc.:

apt-get install synaptic

kvedaa - Debian uses APT, not RPM's (well, at least by default - I guess you could use them too if you really wanted )
