Checking versions of applications?

Is there a standard way to check for which version of an application or driver I am running. I see that the man page will usually list a version, but I imagine that could easily not reference the actual installed version.

Any thoughts?

Look at the help menu of the application? Usually in the "about" part.

If thats not good enough, look at your distributions package manager, it will list a version for any installed package.

There's not a standard but most apps respond to either '-v' or '-V' or '--version' flags (when [vV] isn't 'verbose' or the like). Given that, SciYro's second suggestion is probably the best way to go if you don't need to worry about more than one distro.
