changing to full desktop mode on eee-pc 1000
hi there - using an asus EEE PC 1000 and have been trying to find ways to change the desktop mode. as another post so aptly put it, to shift to a more normal view than the supplied 'fisher price' set up. BIOS info says << EEE PC 1.6.0.104 >>
i followed instructions from a linux afficianado as follows: 1. Open up a terminal buy pressing Ctrl+Alt+T 2. Type "sudo bash" to gain root access (Be careful what you do with root access. The only reason we're using it now is so that you don't have to type sudo before each command. But you could easily mess up your machine if you perform every command as an administrator) 3. Type "apt-get update" to make sure you have access to the most up to date packages 4. Type "apt-get install kicker" and answer "y" when asked if you want to install 5. Type "apt-get install ksmserver" and answer "y" when asked if you want to install 6. Type exit to leave the root account 7. Type exit to close your terminal window Now when you press the power button to turn off your computer, a new option will show up on the left that says "Full Desktop." Shutdown menu BUT this is what i see in the terminal window asus - 20********:/home/user>apt-get install kicker Reading package lists...Done Building dependency tree...Done Package kicker is not available, but is referred to by another package This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package kicker has no installation candidate and so... no change... still trying to find my way round, but have been stuck for time to do it. any help greatly appreciated! |
you need to add the additional repositories to synaptic if you haven't already. It sounds like you just have the basic repos from Asus.

thanks for advice
hi Asusdave - all sounds great, but forgive my ignorance of the terminology, i really am a newbie, hopefully learning little by little.
thanks also tredegar: checked out the links as suggested. followed another set of instructions with what looked initially promising results, but in <<settings>> there are still no options to change the desktop mode as suggested in the thread. never mind, will figure this out somehow. thanks again for quick replies. |
Let us know how you get on.
BTW Quote:
"Windows" is pretty much all-the-same. Linux is pretty much all-different (which is good, in a way: makes it nearly impossible to write viruses, trojans, keyloggers etc). You need to tell us which distro ('buntu, fedora, mint... the list goes on), and then which window-manager you are using (KDE [3.5 or 4.x?], gnome (which version?) ) Etc. Otherwise it is very difficult for us to help you. The GOOD thing is that at the command-line level most distros are more-or-less the same. So we can get rid of the GUI and edit the system files to make it work, regardless of your distro. So, some more information please. In detail, or we can't help you help yourself. |
