changing sources.list permissions

I am running Core 2 and I would like to change my sources.list file. The problem is that I do not have permission. I have changed to root and used

[root@localhost root]# chmod -R a+rw /etc/apt/sources.list
but that does not seem to work. I would also like to write to other folders as well but since root is owner I am not able to. I was told to check my configure file but I dont know how to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
