Changing Monitor with redHat?

Hello- I'm new here and new to linux.
I know some basic Linux commands, but I need to change the monitor settings for my computer, because when I start "X" mode my screen is all garbled.

Any ideas?

run Xconfigurator in console. I mean don't go to gui boot into consol mode, to do so issue
command in xterm
init 3
then login as root and run
Xconfigurator
there you'd be able to choose resolution for your monitor only if the video card will handle it.
