Changing monitor settings?

I recently reinstalled Redhat Linux 9.0. During the installation process, I could not find my monitor in the settings. There was an option to set the Horizontal and vertical Sync. On looking up the monitor's settings in my manual, I found something called hor. and vert. frequencies. Since both of them have the values in khz, I entered those values. The other monitiors in the list also had values in the neighbourhood of what I had entered.

I'm unable to change my resolution to 1024 * 768 and am stuck with 640 * 480 and 800 * 600 (I used [Ctrl] [Alt] [+] ( or ) [-] ). Last time I had selected some monitor from the list and these settings had worked. I know that my video card supports these resolutions as they work in Windows XP.

What am I supposed to do now?

Thanks.

are you sure both your horiz/vert rates are in kHz?
edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (if RH9 uses X.org for x-windows). scroll way down to the bottom. you will see a line that will have "800x600" "640x480" on it. edit this line and add "1024x768" in front of the first entry

Thank you for your suggestion. It worked. In RH9, the file is /etc/X11/XF86Config.
