changing mic to line to cd

I have ALSA working on Slack 9.1 BUT I want to change between
mic and line in fairly often.
I reread the ALSA stuff and my notes to confuse myself!
What I want to know is:
when changing between mic & line-in do I need to save my alsaconf and modules.conf files, then run alsamixer, then run alsactl store each TIME?
Man that's what I get from the docs but that is so stupid did someone
really do that??? If they did they never saw MS windoz.
Can someone set me straight?
Ron

all you do is get a good mixer for your soundcard and change the settings on the fly
i use qamix for my sound blaster live and it has a capture tab with all the setting right there

never mess with your modules.conf file after you get the soundcard working

about alsactl store
there are currently two schools of thought on this one
some people/distros think alsactl should store one safe default setting
so everytime you boot up your mixer settings are one way
these distros shutdown scripts do not store current mixer settings at shutdown
and always load the same setting at startup unless you change them with alsactl store

other distros think like me that shutdown scripts should store current mixer settings and restore them on the next boot

you have to take controll of this situation and decide which way you want it to work and act acordingly
