Changing linux file permissions

Hi ive made progress with my nas , After taking the first SATA hard drive out and connecting it to my laptop via a converter and the driver here ive found out that its in fact running apache .

so ive allready got some scrips copied to the /ide1/local/apache2/htdocs folder which allows them to be run simply by visiting . The last problem i have turning the nas into a server is adjusting the file permissions of the htdocs folder to 777 so i can mess about with the index page and scripts via ftp .

Ive tried it via FTP even starting at /ide1/local/ but the nas wont allow it only /ide1/public can be modified via ftp . I have no way of getting the nas to change the permission without figuring out its customised installer system .

I was wondering if i could just connect the hard disk localy in a linux distro and change the permissions myself ? Or are these FTP permissions even present in the ex2 filing system ?

I set one of these up about a year ago and it's been running great ever since. I got all my info from Chess Griffin's Linux Reality podcast. He did several episodes on this very topic. As far as changing the permissions, you will need to SSH or telnet into the device. Go back and check your info because it sounds like you might have missed the step to enable SSH. Hope this helps.
