and do I need athlon kernel or what cuz im on an Athlon XP 1900+ |

Unless you have reasons not to, you should probably go to 2.4.23: a serious security issue has been found in <=2.4.22. >and do I need athlon kernel or what cuz im on an Athlon XP 1900+ If you want to compile it from source, the compiler itself should be able to optimize it for your system. If you get a precompiled package then you may get a standard i586 build, but you'll have better performance with a athlon-specific build. |
If you are running Redhat, the up2date service will upgrade your kernel to that version. As noted though, a security hole was discovered in many older versions of the kernel (see unSpawn's comments on the LQ homepage) but it has been fixed in 2.4.23 and above. -- J.W.
