Changing file extensions on ACER mini netbook with Linux

I have a small netbook ACER Aspire A110-ab Model ZG5. This came with Linux and I am totally lost, being a Windows user of 1000 years.

Everything seems to be different and I am struggling with everything.
I want to listen to the BBC RADIO. I have tried downloading their IP player, tried their help forum, tried ADOBE - where I came up with a .BIN file. Somewhere I found it might work if I changed the file extension ".BIN" but I did it wrong as I still cant open. Message says "Adobe Reader could not open AdobeAIRinstaller ... not support file type ... could be damaged"

Presently I am wondering whether to go back to/and pay extra for Windows, as I am so frustrated.

Thanks for any (simple for a non-geek) old lady x

BBC uses DRM a lot, which they mainly impliment as realplayer streams. The way to access their stations, therefore, is to use realplayer.

The FOSS version is called "helix player" - and you want the codecs and the plugin for your browser. (See the link) You will get these from the repositories for your distribution (the link is for Mandriva). Which is why it is a good idea to edit your profile to show your location and distro

Some BBC streams are in windows media formats, which can be played in other apps like amerok
