changing desktops
hi, im currently using Fedora core 4 with Gnome as the default desktop. how can i change the default desktop to KDE? i have installed KDE from the fedora dvd, and can see some KDE tools in the applications menu, although im not 100% sure KDE IS actually installed itself.

If you have GDM configured as your display-manager (as opposed to starting the gnome-session directly via startx or so...) you will likely see the option if you click the "session" button on the login-screen - if KDE is fully installed it should appear there as a choice.
"startkde" from the text-console could be another way... |
Log out, and in the log in screen, there's a button on the bottom of the screen called "Session". Click on that, and you'll get a window with a list of sessions on your system. KDE should be one of them, select it, and click Okay. Then log in. When you do, it will ask you if you want to make this session your default session. If you say yes, KDE will be your default session, and you won't have to select it each time. If you say no, the next time you log in it will go back to GNOME.

thanks, i am now using KDE :)

If you want, you can also install the kdm package, and uninstall the gdm. I think the kdm login screen is a little better looking than the gnome one.

...an opinion I don't share :)
- but if he wants to... |
i read that it is difficult to uninstall Gnome? although i do like the idea of being able to remove it fully (as i wont be using it in the future). i can already see that i like KDE better than Gnome, i think Gnome is a little bit basic, and id say its not that user friendly as it claims to be, i found it confusing(!). im still a noob at the moment trying different programs out, learning the commandline etc.

Yea, you more than likely can uninstall GNOME, including GDM. I'd suggest installing yumex from the Fedora Extras repository, then you can uninstall the GNOME group. That *should* auto-calculate all the remove dependencies.

cool, i will try yumex, thanks sub_pop_culture and everyone who has helped :)
