changing character set in linux box

Hi all, I've got boxes..., one has Mandrake 9.2, and the other one (this one) has SuSE 9.1, now every time I create some file from this box and save it in the other one, all special characters (like ñ, or something like á), get screwed up..., when I open the file saved, from some other machine..., like the one with Mandrake.., or some other pc from the network (they work with windows xp)

I guess it's an encoding problem..., how can I change the encoding I'm using, and how do I know what enconding is using the Mandrake Box???

Thanks in advance!!!

Haora

EDIT: I should mentio that I'm mounting the Mandrake box as NFS

Are you talking about text in the filename, or inside the file? Encoding within the file will be an option in whatever editor you're using. Filename problems could be one of two things: either the systems are using different encodings in their filesystems (check fstab), or NFS is munging it.
