change to 64 bit OS

Hi

I am going to install Redhat AS 4.0 on AMD 64 bit processor while enabling the 32 bit option.

My question is, if I need to switch the processor to 64 bit in future, does the OS needs to be resintalled?

thanks

Suresh

There is no switching/enabling of processor involved...AMD64 has the ability to use both 32-bit and 64-bit OSes. However, if you want use a 64-bit OS, you will have to install a 64-bit OS. Otherwise, AMD64 works just perfect with 32-bit support. I am not sure, redhat enterprise edition comes with 64-bit, however, fedora, ubuntu, suse do have 64-bit edition.

Thanks for the reply.

we are buying 64 bit AMD opteron processor, but because Oracle doesnt support 64 bit installation for the moment, we are forced to use 32 bit AMD processor.

So currently the matrix is 32 bit AMD -> 32 Bit Linux AS 4.0 -> 32 bit Oracle 10g R2

when Oracle certifies, we will upgrade Oracle to 64 Bit version and the new matrix will be

64 Bit AMD -> 64 Bit Linux AS 4.0 -> 64 bit Oracle.

So my question is would I need to reinstall Linux AS at that point in time?

If I read your response correctly, it does look like I need to reinstall OS again.

Kindly confirm

Thanks

Suresh

No the matrix would be

32-bit/64-bit AMD -> 32 Bit Linux AS 4.0 -> 32 bit Oracle 10g R2

Again, 64-bit AMD are designed to work flawlessly with a 32-bit OS. To give you an idea, see my signature...I use AMD64 (Dual core) with Slackware Linux 10.2 (32-bit), Ubuntu 5.10(AMD64 x86_64 edition), Arch Linux 0.7 (32-bit) and Windows XP (which is again 32-bit)...and I don't have to change anything. All this means is that AMD64 are ready for both 32-bit and 64-bit OSes. Install whichever you want to and it would work flawlessly.
