change password for root usr

This is my first time using linux. i did a dual boot thing with winxp and mandrake linux. everything went fine until i got to the localhost login thing. i have been running a network in our house for a long time now and we never put in passwords for our users. we just didnt need it because anyone who would get into the network at our home wasnt going to vandalize documents or the os. when mandrake asked me for a password i didnt put one. so when i try to log on as uc -> it doesnt let me. it says "login failed". so how do i change my password so that i can actally get into the darn os.

Thanks!

oops, i should have replied earlier. you should just boot into single mode and set it then, no hassle at all.
