Unless it's been upgraded, the limiting thing will be the 512MB memory. Distros you might like to try are AntiX and Bodhi.

PS @ grail: anything is better than Linpus Lite!

Just to add to what DavidMcann suggestion which are good ones by the way for 512MB of ram.

My 1gig ZG5 and others gave thumbs up for http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/view...p?f=91&t=35465

My feedback and others with a zg5 are also in the Beta 1 thread http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/view...p?f=91&t=35402

But if you are limited with the 512MB zg5. Then DavidMcanns suggestions are what I would go with.
Just a side note. I run SlackO 5.6 Puppy Linux on a 512MB ram Atom Netbook I was going to sell but I am procrastinating that idea. I run Slackware 14.0 repos and Salix 14.0 repos in its package manager.
Works pretty snappy.

AntiX is a great suggestion for older/underpowered hardware, though I confess I am not familiar with that exact model number.

Guys, changing from linpus lite to any other lite linux os seems like a whole lot of hurdles for me to jump. Before I do any thing, I think I'll look into some linux tutorials and learn what all these off the wall named applications do.

Thanks for all the advice

That is a fine idea, just keep three important things in mind:

1. Linux Linpus Lite is completely different interface than any other Linux, so the time you spend learning it will not necessarily be a transferable skill.
2. As far as I know, Linpus is not being actively supported with security patches and bug fixes, so I personally would not use it for anything kind of online shopping, banking, personal information, etc.
3. The "whole lot of hurdles" is a discussion between you and the person that sold you this non-functional laptop. 99% of people who buy a computer, they take it home and turn it on, and it works fine. If you are not too deep into the project, then maybe think about simply returning the lemon Acer and buying something that fits your needs. Personally, if someone sold me a computer and it was unusable, I would want my money back.

Good luck!

Snowpine has made very good points about the oddity of Linpus and its lack of security.

I've just visited the AntiX forum and there's a thread "What do you run AntiX on?" Among the answers is "my little Acer Aspire One", so it will be fine. I also read that it will only use 2GB of your drive. And it's no big deal to install it: the instructions are very good.
