That is a fine idea, just keep three important things in mind:
1. Linux Linpus Lite is completely different interface than any other Linux, so the time you spend learning it will not necessarily be a transferable skill.
2. As far as I know, Linpus is not being actively supported with security patches and bug fixes, so I personally would not use it for anything kind of online shopping, banking, personal information, etc.
3. The "whole lot of hurdles" is a discussion between you and the person that sold you this non-functional laptop. 99% of people who buy a computer, they take it home and turn it on, and it works fine. If you are not too deep into the project, then maybe think about simply returning the lemon Acer and buying something that fits your needs. Personally, if someone sold me a computer and it was unusable, I would want my money back.
