IF you are running X using startx you just have to edit .xinitrc and add exec gnome-session andcomment any other lines that mught be there.

If you are running KDM, it should detect gnome automatically and then you just have to select gnome from the menu.

I hope this help,

Good night

just install gnome as root
apt-get install gnome gdm
when you reboot, gdm will start and you can choose gnome as your session. of course you can not install gdm and use kdm (if it is installed)
