CentOS6.2 can't have "no compiler" can it?

I received an error, stating that bash was unable to find CC or GCC. Surely this is a mistake. Is there a problem with the default configuration?

No mistake, you don't need a compiler unless you're going to compile something. Windows doesn't come with a compiler (as far as I know), neither does OSX.

You probably just need to install the gcc package. Use "yum provides gcc" (or whatever package distribution system CentOS uses) to find out the name of the package you need to install.

A compiler is not normally installed by default for most distros.

Most distros do however have a package that includes the most common tools (gcc make etc)

I don't have a CentOS system handy, but believe the command should be:

yum groupinstall 'Development Tools'

You may also need to install library files or any other dependencies for the particular program that you are trying to compile.

Installing a fully functional gcc : # yum install gcc-c++

I.e. installing the c++ compiler will also install the dependencies
that make the c compiler (gcc) work.

# yum grouplist : Lists the available groups, like "Development Tools".

For the record, the DVD set offers the choice of three desktops:

mimimal (add your own software later)
full (all the desktop-style software on the disk; for office computers, where the SA does any compiling necessary)
developer (the same, plus support for compilation; for home computers, where you may need to add stuff, or for programmers)

I expect you installed from the CD, which is probably equivalent to "full".
