No mistake, you don't need a compiler unless you're going to compile something. Windows doesn't come with a compiler (as far as I know), neither does OSX.
You probably just need to install the gcc package. Use "yum provides gcc" (or whatever package distribution system CentOS uses) to find out the name of the package you need to install.

For the record, the DVD set offers the choice of three desktops:
mimimal (add your own software later)
full (all the desktop-style software on the disk; for office computers, where the SA does any compiling necessary)
developer (the same, plus support for compilation; for home computers, where you may need to add stuff, or for programmers)
I expect you installed from the CD, which is probably equivalent to "full".
