Centos network settings and ownership

I am an infant(new born) with Centos. Installed 5.6 and all is well except my window pc doesn't see the centos laptop on the network, but it is on the network. I have access to the Internet via firefox.
Obviously need to set some ipconfig settings, but when I try to edit ipcfg file in sbin, I get a msg, "not the owner, can't save".
Is sbin the right directory?
Is ipcfg the right file to edit?

Appreciate your response. Be kind. I need to learn this.

Joel

Please define "see the centos laptop" because you are very lost.

What I mean to say is when I put a Windows laptop on my home network, I can see it in Network. But the centos laptop is using a cat5 into my hub and has Internet access, but I don't see it on the local network.

Sounds like what you actually want to do is share files between your PCs. You should look into what's called Samba. Try installing it then starting it. (describing how would take more time than I am willing to spend on this. there are Google results or books you can look at)

Editing /sbin/ipcfg is completely wrong. ipcfg would be an executable, not a config file. You should read some Linux for Beginners books.

If you are new to Linux you should take a look at fedoraproject.org or www.ubuntu.com. Those Linuxs are meant for the avg user. Centos is a server os and was build for a admin to use.

You were right. I installed ubuntu over centos. Ubuntu is so much easier. Thanks
