CentOS in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
 

Hi there,

I have recently tried to work on my Linux skills using CentOS 5.2 in a Virtual PC. During the setup I was forced to use the text mode installation, as the video mode did not appear to work correctly.

Now the installation process has completed the default run level is 3. I would like to change this to 5, however are unsure of how to configure the system to the correct video settings. Given my limited knowledge of Linux, I don't want to boot in run level 5, with no video output.

Has anyone done this before in a virtual environment? if so, can you provide some assistance as to how to setting the GUI settings etc?

Well, you'll need to set the video settings, so we need to know the motherboard, graphics card specs to advise you. Also the screen specs.

Thanks for the fast reply. I am running this VM on an IBM x60 running on an Intel 945 Video chipset. I would have thought I would need to install the virtual hardware within the Virtual PC?

What files would need to be run/edited for this?

MS VPC does not really support Linux. It appears to work more or less but it has its quirks. Why not use something that is a bit more Linux friendly? Virtualbox? VMWare?
If you decide to stick with it, you'll need to get the equivalent of VMWare Tools, a set of extra drivers for the virtual pc - but I can't tell you whether such a thing exists at all.

All that was necessary was to change the colour depth from 24 to 16 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
