Centos - Can't Use Gnome Themes

Howdy,

I'm experiencing weird issues with Gnome themes. Basically, when I use gnome-theme-manager and I choose a theme it... does not work. Nothing happens, nothing changes. Everything is working for pre-installed themes.

I thought there might be something with the theme I tried to install so I downloaded and tried over 50 themes. None of them works correctly.

On my second PC, I got Debian installed and everything is working correctly there, every single theme works.

Any suggestions?

** Bump **

Does anybody has any suggestion?

frankbell 09-07-2010 08:24 PM

More detail please:

What version CentOS are you using?

What version of Gnome?

Could you link to one or two of the themes that are not working so others could look at them?

Also, a word to the wise: This is a forum, not a chat. It takes some time for persons to read new posts and respond to them. It may be a while before someone who may be able to help you finds your question, decides he or she can help, and frames a response.

I know your problem is urgent to you, but three hours is not long to allow for someone to volunteer to help.

And, no, I've never had a problem with KDE or Gnome themes not working, so I would have to test some stuff, if I chose to, to try to help you.

It's up to you to motivate me to want to help you.

@frankbell - my "bump" post was created only to keep thread on the first page, nothing more. Really.

Back to topic. Requested details:
Centos: 5.5
Gnome: 2.16.0

No theme downloaded from gnome-look.org is working for me. For example, this theme: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...2906d3885920ba

How did you install them?

I tried all ways to install them. Installing via gnome-theme-manager, pasting them directly to user home directory, pasting them to /usr/share/themes. Also I tried to chmod files. Without any luck.

Are they archives? If so, you must extract them. Try putting them into ~/.themes. (notice that the name of the dir begins with a dot, thus it's hidden)

This is how it should look:
Code:

~
  .themes
    MyTheme
      gtk-2.0
        (gtk theme files go here)
      openbox-3
        (openbox theme files go here)
    AnotherTheme
      gtk-2.0
        (gtk theme files go here)

Tried your suggestions, without any luck. I think I've lost any hope now. I tried it with different themes, none of them works correctly. I have totally no idea what could be wrong here. When I try them on Debian, they work perfectly.

I found a really weird thing. Take a look at this screenshot: http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/794/zrzutekranum.png. Themes on the list looks really weird, with a cross icon on their thumbnail.

And remeber that you don't put the extracted theme into .themes/MyTheme/gtk-2.0, the theme file already contains the gtk-2.0 dir.

To demonstrate, I installed the theme you posted in post #4.

I downloaded the archive. Here are the contents:

http://a.imageshack.us/img340/2622/themearchive.png

Then I extracted it directly into "~/.themes". Now this is what's in my "~/.themes" (the ones from the archive I just extracted are selected):

And it works!

I tried the themes from the link you posted and they work just follow the directions as @MTK358 shows on his images, I tried them on my CentOS, the red x marks you mentioned seeing is because you have not installed the fonts that the theme uses after installing the elementary icons those x marks dissapeared. This is the first time I have installed a theme on CentOS never even thought of it mainly changed the background before and that was it.
