centos 5.5 need to reset gui password not the root password
 

I found an old laptop that has centos 5.5 installed. I reset the root password, but I need to reset the gui password. Is there a way to view this password or reset it? I have not worked with Linux over 5 years and am rusty on all the commands

Change <username> to your user name.

I was not clear in my post and I apologize.
I do not remember either the login or the password
currently I am stuck at the login page.

I really just want to get on the gui and use it as a quick reference in my craft room. But without the gui log on information I am afraid I will have to pack up this laptop and never use it.

all I remember is how to reset the root password - which I did. But I do not remember much beyond that. In fact I have reached out an am reviewing some of the tutorials on this site.

If you can reset the root password, you can reset any user password the same way.

Is it possible that you reset something other than the root password?

Just for clarity can you tell us how you reset the root password, then we can maybe tell you how to reset the user passwords from that point.

Steps I took to reset root
1. reboot system
2. used space bar to interrupt when launching grub
3. highlighted the grub version (2.6.18-194.32.1.e15) and pressed a
4. typed 1 after the grub append> ro root=/dev/volgroup00/logvo100 rhgb quiet 1
5. pressed enter
6. typed passwd after the sh-3.2#
7. reset my password - typed in twice

Now what I am stuck :O

My issue this was installed by me in 2009 on an old IBMthinkpad for a Linux class.
I just found this laptop and could use it if I can log into it as it still has a parallel port I can use to an old laser printer I still use for my craft room

I have forgotten the (I call it GUI) login and password, because this laptop was long forgotten as well.

Another question - would it be easier just to set up a new user for the GUI portion?
If so is there a tutorial on how to do that?

Ah! Then you did reset the root passwd.

So just do the same thing down to step 6, where you need to use passwd username instead.

If you don't remember the user name, just get to step 6, then type ls /home which will show you the home directory names (i.e. user names) of users on that machine. Then use those to reset passwords.

So like this except with your actual user names...

What could be easier than that?
