CDRW access in Linux Mandrake

Hi,

I am using Mandrake 9.1 on this comp, I have 2 SCSI HDD on my Adaptec card, these works great, they have 2 and 3 as their IDs, I have a PlexWriter 8/2/20 CDRW that I put on the line, it is using ID5, the card is correctly on ID7. But, I am not able to read my CDs, it gives impossible to enter /mnt/cdrom I know this burner works, I tried it on an other SCSI card I have at an other point, and I was able to read from it, are there some configs I have to do to get it properly installed in Mandrake 9.1?

Cheers!

Do you mount the drive and get an error? What error are you getting?

If you cannot mount the drive, are you using devfs? you can check this by seeing if you have a /dev/scsi/host*/bus*/target5/lun0/ directory. Inside there, there should be a "cd" device. If the directory exists but there is no "cd" device, then you need to load the SCSI cdrom driver (it is a module called sr_mod.o I believe).

If you are not using devfs, then things are harder to diagnose since the device tree does not reflect what drivers are loaded. The first scsi cdrom drive detected is typically /dev/scd0 (make sure your /dev/cdrom is a symlink to this device). Also make sure you have scsi cdrom drive support loaded.

In addition, to write to a cd-r or -rw, you'll need a cd burning application such as cdrecord (or one of the many graphical frontends to it), as well as the SCSI Generic (sg.o) driver (in devfs, this will appear as a "generic" device in the drive's directory). You'll also need to use mkisofs to generate the .ISO cd image to burn onto the CD.

Thank you for this procedure, I discovered that my SCSI card was not able to support this Plexter CDRW drive, but honestly, I had no idea of the configs I had to do as you laid out, this is good.

Cheers
