CDROM not found

I have re-deployed an old Dell PC from our instituiton, I have previously installed a Mandrake distribution with no problems, however when i try to install either Xandros 2.0 or Ubuntu then every thing gets to the point of hardware/CD Rom detection and then it stops! Unable to find CD ROM, any suggestions?

i've had that problem quite a few times with old cdrom drives(16x and under) when trying to install linux and even '98 on them. My guess was they were probably non std 'cos i used another drive to install the OS, then put the old one back and it worked fine once an OS was installed! try figure that one out.
