You said you typed unmount, but umount (there is no n in the command) is the correct command and should have unmounted it if it isn't being looked at by something else.

Another command that will unmount the drive and stick out it's tongue is

eject

its already mounted and i am trying to unmount it here is what i see =)
bash-2.04# mount /cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom already mounted or /cdrom busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/hdc is already mounted on /cdrom
bash-2.04# unmount /cdrom
bash: ummount: command not found
bash-2.04# unmount /cdrom

Concercing your login problem:

These are configuration files resp. the user and password database. You can not execute them directly.

You can view them using cat, more or less (a word game ;-) like this:

bash-2.04# cat /etc/passwd
bash-2.04# more /etc/passwd
bash-2.04# less /etc/passwd

(to quit less, press "q")

Alternatively, to filter the lines containing the username you may use grep:

bash-2.04# grep <username> /etc/passwd

If you do so: do you find your username in passwd and shadow? Posting the line from passwd might be helpful, but please don't post any lines of /etc/shadow, this file should be kept private.

well i used those commands that you posted but it was nothing but a list of commands and yes i saw the usernames and passwords. maybe i should be a little clearer.

i had an existing user name that worked.
now when i log on to it... it seems to work... screen blinks and goes to black and then takes me back to the login screen. when i log in to a new user that i created in my earlier post it comes back to a blue screen one which seems to be the desk top.
then this is what it said:
creating directory:
/Desktop
ok

i clicked ok... then:
! could not create ~/.kde/share/apps/kfm/magic
ok

then it feezes on a blue background with a purple little box (bottom right) Console log for linux
it cannot be used

this problem started happening when i was trying to increase my screen resolution.
