Question CDROM/DVD Drive conflict

Hi -

I just install a DVD drive and now when I do a :
$ mount /dev/cdrom

The devicxe being read is the newly installed DVD drive rather then my CDROM drive. Is there a way from me to verify that both drives are installed/ or recognized properly by the OS? I've also tried :

$ mount /dev/hdc

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

seems the symbolic link is pointing to the wrong device ?
delete /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom1

and try mounting the cd-rom by itts real /dev/ device.

/dev/hda = primary maser
/dev/hdb = primary slave
/dev/hbc = seconry master
/dev/hdd = secondry slave

i am of ourse assuming your pc uses IDE drives and not SCSI.
you didnt mention.

if that works, just create a new symbolic link to the correct cd-drive.

ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom

replace hdc with either hda hdb hdc or hdd depending where you plugged your drive in (primary or secondry) what what the jumber on the drive is set to (slave or master)

do that for both your cd drives.
you may also need to edit your /etc/fstab file. i dont know wether linux does that for you automatically on bootup or not.

This is a server mb so it allows for 4 IDE's. I think I need to be more specific with my systems configuration:
IDE1 has 2 hard drives so Master hda and Slave hdb
IDE2 has a DVD and Tape drive.
Master DVD = hdc
Slave Tape = hdd
IDE3 has the CDROM which I guess should be hde.

Is this correct?

dmesg | more

and scroll through the output to see what device has been assigned to your cdrom

this is the output I get after doing a dmesg:

hdc: attached ide-cdrom driver.
hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
cs4281: version v1.30.32 time 21:56:57 Apr 24 2004
cs4281: Subsystem vendor/id (0000:0000) IRQ 17
hdc: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: command error: error=0x50
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0

Looks like hdc is assigned to both the CDROM and DVD.

I should also point out that I just read in my mb manual that IDE3 andIDE4 are reserved for ATA66 and ATA100 so I guess that would explain whyI can not access the hard drive since it is on IDE3 as a stand aloneprimary.

I think I'm going to remove the rarely used tape drive on this box to get things back to a more normal configuration.
