I believe all versions of Corel Linux are quite old. It is possible that your computer is just too new to work with it. One reference I found says it will work with most Pentium II and Pentium III machines but it might have trouble with systems using Pentium IV and newer. It also has this suggestion for troubleshooting:

For troubleshooting problems, there are still archives of Corel Linux newsgroup postings available via Google searches (click on the Groups tab).
I know you would like to install Corel Linux because you have a book to go with it, but if you can't get it to work with your hardware I would suggest you try one of the current live CD distributions you can download for free. You can run these from the CD without installing to your hard drive, so you can see if you like it. If you have fairly new hardware with at least 512MB of ram, you might give Ubuntu a try. If your machine can't meet the Ubuntu requirements, and your machine is at least a Pentium II with at least 128MB of ram, Knoppix should work. You can search the Internet for other live CDs. There are quite a few of them.
