cd sound no mp3 sound

New to linux and just installed fedora core2
I am using KDE and I can play a cd using KsCD

however, I can not hear anything if I try to play a mp3 with Xmms or k3b.

Already installed a pach for the mixer (applets) I had the same trouble everyone else did. The diminishing sound control. That is fixed.

I am guessing there is just some setting or option somewhere that I have not defined.

thanks

Open a console.
Type su and enter your root password.
You can use both APT and Yum (in default, Fedora uses Yum)

Using APT:
Code:

apt-get install xmms-mp3
Using Yum:
Code:

yum install xmms-mp3

already installed xmms-mp3

I found this already installed

[root@raccoon2 root]# rpm -qa xmms-mp3
xmms-mp3-1.2.10-2.2.p.1.fc2.fr

must be something else more simple I would guess

What happens if you do:
Code:

xmms your-file.mp3
(in a console)

file associations? ???+

with this shakira song

[root@raccoon2 root]# xmms /home/david/musicmp3/03 - Un Poco De Amor.rmj

the xmms player comes up and I get the add files dialog box
so press play or click on the file and still no sound even press play on the xmms screen
seems as though the file does not get loaded

or i try

xmms /home/david/musicmp3/Avril Lavigne - 09 - Who Knows.mp3

and sometimes I get stuck in here, where ever the heck this is

control c gets me out of here because I think it is still somewhere in the xmms program. Maybe this one is a bad file I downloaded from the internet but I know the shakira song works in windows.

Well, rmj's won't work, you'll need the real-media player for
those, I don't know of a XMMS plugin for them.

Try a "known good" mp3.

77 percent

I see volume at 77 percent when I move the mouse over the speaker icon by the clock in kde
kmix is the mixer I am using unless I am in gnome right. Should not matter in which desktop I move the mixer control I think.

btw i dont use gnome much if at all

of course kscd still plays music fine.

wait maybe i am on to something ... I looking at my input plugins and i dont see anything that says mp3

there are MPEG layer 1 2 3 something.so

do I need more plugins

hi there,

i m not that much a newbie but i do have problems with xmms too. xine and others have no problems playing my mp3 but, however, xmms has. somehow xmms is running through an 5 min mp3 in a few seconds without playing any sound. already tried different versions of xmms (original fedora core2) or the rpms from freshprms.net (sure i installed the mp3 plugins) nothing is working correctly. maybe somebody out there knows the answer.
