CD-RW Problems

Is there a way to use cdrw capabilities like in InCD (Windows) under RedHat 9?

You can definitely use CDRW's in Linux

I'd suggest looking at www.freshmeat.net OR your install CD's OR www.rpmfind.net for:
k3b

It's so far, been, what I've found to be, the very most newbie friendly CD Burning application in linux. It's comperable to something like Nero in windoze.

Also, for you, since I see you are using Redhat, you might look at www.freshmeat.net for an application called:
Synaptic
It will really help with those dependencies you will run into, and also help when you want to just install things without searching for RPM's for them. It requires apt, but that should all be listed on Synaptics site.

Cool

Thanks. I'm trying to piece together the requirements of k3b and hopefully the packages are available in the RH 9 discs. 56k is painfully slow for downloading all the requirements and sub-requirements.

Good Luck! You may even have the k3b itself on there, that'd help for sure!

I don't know if it's for you, or your situation, but have you given a look at something like mandrake that automatically takes care of dependencies for you? It's much nicer/easier than hunting down all of the required files, and those required files (dependency hell it's termed)... It's a feature called urpmi And maybe RH has a port for it, I don't even know where to point you to look though.

Cool

Does the Mandrake get the dependencies via ftp or disc?

I'll also try Mandrake but I'm actually liking the challenge of RH. It reminds me of the DOS days where we input commands all the time. I guess I shouldn't have been lured to Windows. Now I feel like a kid all over again.

Both/either-or

And in mandrake you "can" use those same commands, it's just that there are tools that assist you so you don't have to.

Woohoo, I see that you've used both for quite some time (Mandy 8.2 and RH 7.2)

In your opinion which is better/why? At least from a n00bs perspective? I'm totally biased, so I never do good on that, because to me, Mandrake was my drug that got me started on linux. What do they call MJ when referring to drugs.. Man, I can't remember, anyway, that's what Mandrake was to me (something like a porthole, but that's not it.., enabler, but that's not it either..).

Cool
