CD-Rom I/O error in stage 1 install
 

Trying my first install and need help!!

Trying to install Mandrake 9.2 on a Mitac 5114vu mobo, Maxtor 40gb hdd, lite-on LTR-52327S CD-R/W, AMD-K6 cpu.

I've tried CD1, CD2, and bootdisk floppy with CD all with the same results.
"Error in exec of Stage2"
Trying to execute " /usr/bin/runinstall2" from the installation volume
The following Fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE!: I/O ERROR

I can boot from the CD and if I use CD2 it even asks for the installation CD but when I put in CD1 it seems to loose the interface when it tries to load and run " /usr/bin/runinstall2"

I even tried copying and burning a new install CD same result. I also tried an old RedHat 7.0 install CD and it lost the I/O at about the same place. I think it might be the CD-R/W or firmware but don't know.

Anybody got any ideas or sugestions?????

Did you check the md5 sums for the cds?

If you are having a serious problem, I would take the isos on a cd (the actual isos not the burned iso) over to a friends place and try burning there.

Also burn them very slowly, they are notoriously bitchy about being burned at high high speeds. It may help if you talk to it while it is burning at 4x :)

If none of that works, then take your hd out of your computer, go to a friends place, install it from the cds, then come home. :)

I'll give the ISO trick a try. I don't know about the md5 sums though. I'm so new to Linux I don't even know what that means. I'm guessing it's some kind of checksum or parity error checking to see if the images are ok???

I'm not sure about 9.2 but I just did something particularlly silly in 10.0 Community... not saying you have too but every idea helps right?

If you burn the 700Mb isos to a 74min CD rather than an 80min CD the software will launch and then fail as soon as it tries to read any data which has fallen off the end of the disk.

cdrecord gives you a little error message but it is easily missed in the huge amount of information it gives out.

So, check the size of the isos and the size of the media you are trying to put it on.
