cd problems: Audio and DVD

While I can access data CDs normally with Mandrake 8.1, I do not know how to make it recognize audio CDs and DVDs. When I start a CD player program, it simply cannot see detect the CD.

What should I do?

Thanks

audio cd's shouldn't be mounted. the cdplayer should be able to play them by itself.
