 i resently installed mandrake 9.2, no prob . I use it for a week, no prob, and then the cd icon on the desktop disapears and when I use /mnt , I see the cd file, i click on it; it opens and i can not see the contents. When i try to instal sume thing from a cd, it does not work.

i'm desperate.

try typing the command

mount cdrom
or
mount /dev/cdrom

and see if it puts the icon back on your desktop. If this works, then I would assume that autorun has been disabled on your system somehow, as this is the program that automatically mounts CDs after insertion. Even if the icon doesn't appear, see if you can now see the Cd's contents in /mnt/cdrom. If so, then you have successfully mounted it and shold be able to use it as you wish.
I'm not familiar with Mandrake; I use Fedora. Somehow, however, there should be a way to restart automount and have it start automatically again. Aside from symlinking it in the Autostart directory (which is the only way I know how to...I use KDE instead of Gnome, and my Sessions manager doesn't work).

Perhaps somebody else can chime in here to help you there...

Good luck...
