Career Suggetion
 

Hi All,

I m a newbie for Linux. Right now I am working on Oracle 8i on windows platform....But out of so many reasons I m getting hell a lot of interest in Linux and planning to get into it seriously.. .

If any one can help me with their sugetion regarding the career in Linux...Pls feel free to Air.

Well, where I live (North East Ohio, USA) there is a lot of job postings lately for database programmers. If you stick with that, I think that you would make a good living.

I my opinion, Oracle on Linux is going to be really big in the near future. I read a lot about Linux in the enterprise, and it seems that most are looking at it or implementing it. IBM has helped the Linux community a lot. My uncle manages a team that install networks and said that there is a lot of interest in it in the enterprise enviroment.

So, if you can get your hands on Oracle for Linux and become profient in it. I say that you will be making the money.

Well there is a catch to finding a decent career, at least in IT. You have to have experience. I have a BS in CS from Purdue. Right out of college I signed up with training programs for Oracle 8i and 9i ocp dba certifications. I completed the courses, took the exams, and got both certifications. Browsing monster.com, you can't find a single dba job anywhere where they don't want 5-10 years of experience. Even with the programmer/developer jobs, they all seem to want at least 2 years. A lot of the companies don't even care if you have a degree or certification, which is just bs. It's hard to get started in this field. But if anyone has any ideas, let me know.

By the way, running Oracle on linux is just awesome. There were some bugs in 8i release 3 for Windows, which I found didn't apply to the linux version. I'm running 9i on Redhat 8 right now, and it's flawless.

kly546, have you tried to get a lower level job to start with? Where I work I took a tech job to get experience while I finish my degree. If you can get into a place event as a tech you can always move up.

Right now is kind of a bad time to look for an IT job.

Tell me about it!! Everytime I go online to all my job search links I get REALLY frustrated. I too have a BS in CIS and a Cisco CCNA cert. I took a part time job as a tech on top of my full-time aerospace job just to get some documentation. You right, a degree doesn't seem to be the thing for THIS industry. You have to remember the Bill Gates generation that all dropped out of college to start big companies. The problem is the IT industry has this almost rebel attitude about it. The only thing we can do is keep plugging away learning as much stuff as possible. I want to learn Oracle as well... Where is a good place to locate it at a decent price?
