cant modify /usr/local/bin folder
I'm totally new to linux. Been using it for about a day now and i've picked up the basic priciples of it. Had a few problems though, one of them is when I try to install the 'Python' interpreter. The default folder to install to is /usr/local/bin but it keeps returning this error message - /usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/python2.4': Permission denied.
I went to the bin folder and tried to create the folder manually with no luck. It seems the folder is read only and it wont let me create any files or folders in this directory. I would rather install it here because, as I understand it, the bin folder allows you to execute commands without having to call directories all the time. Your help would be appreciated. BTW I use Mandrake 10.2 |
Are you loggen in as root when trying this?
|
nope. Not quite sure how to. Is root your admin login? Whenever I try to log in as admin it keeps saying 'login failed' and will only let me log in with my user account.
|
That's because the name of admin on a linux box
is root :) Cheers, Tink |
nice 1! its sorted. That kills two birds with 1 stone. Cheers! :)
