cant install ubuntu
I got ubuntu from a pc mag dvd. I downloaded it and tested the media and it came up fine. I burnt a dvd iso copy. Now it says to burn the iso to cd but the file is 714mb which is larger than all my cd's so i used a dvd.
Durind sdtep 4 of 7 on the initial steps of install it seems to hang. What can i do? |
Have a look at "BurningIsoHowto" at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto or " Downloading and burning an ISO of Ubuntu" at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso
Make sure you are burning an ISO and NOT just copying the ISO. |

One thing, Burn the iso at a slower rate(like around 2-4x), I don't know why this matters, but I used to always have trouble with my iso burns, before following this advice, since then, not a single problem. When you say it gets to "Step 4 of 7".. are you installing from a Live CD?(ie, a CD you can surf the internet, start programs, look at menus, etc..). If so, some PC's have hardware that while it will work on the install, it will goof up the Live CDs installer. For this reason, Ubuntu released the "Alternate Install CD"... Its completely text based, but still quite easy to use... You might want to give it a try. One other word of advice to save you headaches on down the road, even if your machine is 64bit capable, download the 32bit installers(x86). Otherwise, you'll spend a good portion of your day learning to make 32bit only apps, run on a 64bit machine. http://osmirrors.cerias.purdue.edu/p...releases/7.04/ IGF |
Ok I really dont want another link to read as i am confused so i came here.
Now the burn at a slower speed thing is good in theory but you cant burn a dvd at a slower speed with nero. I only get 48X (4)or fast speeds and that is IT! I asked a cd/dvd forum about this and they say it is the dvd itself which i have verbatim. I had major problems with fedora at 2.7g download which again i couldnt burn the iso at a slow speed. With ubuntu it can work but the disk partitions need to be created, as i it needs a place to put home which i have 1 HD with a windows partiton and 20g for linux. Do I need to create partitions within the desired 20g to put linux as again the instructions are not speecific. This is one big headache, I think i need to buy a copy as this downloading and burn speeds it just is to messy and unrealiable. |
I would always install from ONE CD--then get everything else thru the package manager..
The link below will give you some tips on installing linux, partitions, etc. By the way, don't set out to learn Linux and then say "I don't want to read links". That's like trying to learn to drive without the effort of opening the car doors....;) |

>No, 20gigs is plenty for an Ubuntu install. Just during
>the install, assign Ubuntu to the 20gig partition, and it >will do the rest. Ok let me read what you said later but what interested me was this. This is the question as how do i assign the whole thing to the 20G without creating 3 partitons manually with gparted . PS Deep burner had only 4X speed or max like nero but infrrecorder had 1X and 2X sppeds to burn . |

Just run the installer, and choose the 20gig partition to install Linux, it will do the rest. It will create a small swap partition(a drive that size, probably in the 500mb-1gig range), and the rest will be used for the filesystem. There is no need to make a separate partition for /home unless you really want to. IGF |
nO I do have 2 drives and there was no option to just install on a 20g space so i manually created / 5g, /swap 1 and /home 13g.
I have installed ubuntu from the liveCD. It crashed after loading the 1st time after i installed the OS but has been ok since. Maybe initial hiccups . NOw my internet connection fails to work but it works fine on winxp on other dual boot load. How do i configure this as I thought it would obtain an ip automatically? How do i get other software eg firewall,AV etc for this? |

Unless Ubuntu failed to detect your second drive(which I doubt, since you seem to have somewhat succesffully installed), there was definitely an option to choose a drive. I guess I just don't understand why you made all those partitions. There should have been an option during the install process to "erase entire disk and install Ubuntu" or something to that effect, once you choose that one, you simply choose which drive you want, and the instaler does the rest(including setting the swap). If you used the alternate install CD, it would have looked something like this... http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...GunFreak/6.jpg I can't find a shot of the GUI installer, but trust me, its there. I did a dual boot and was confused as to what th other options did to my winxp.
I have wireless connection to my smc model no-wg14 router. I have installed ubuntu 7.04 (dual boot)and i get no internet connection. It works fine on winxp on other OS. I thought i didnt need to configure internet on my FF? I have internet broadband cable connection which is conncted to the router on the only other PC. |
