The boot loader (syslinux, isolinux) errors out claiming there is not enough
high memory to load the kernel. I believe the boot loader thinks that
highmem size (starting at 0x100000) is only 4KB.
If I move the 4KB region elsewhere, (say, to below "top of memory"), then
the bootloader succeeds in loading the Linux kernel (which is about 1.5 MB
in size in my case).
Unfortunately I don't know how to display Query System Address Map and how to move some memory region elsewhere.

Here: http://www.abclinuxu.cz/poradna/linu...d=c6rdpb5cx77g I found some interesting information (in Czech). OP encountered ``Not enough memory to load specified kernel'' message on the machine with 512 MB RAM. According to some advice he passed to the kernel parameter mem=512MB and in result he installed the system successfully. So you could try parameter mem=1GB.
Hello, it is me, carlos the jackal, ( now the hyena. )

BIOS setting : Advanced chipset - memory hole was set to 32mb-48b or something. Memory should be set to disabled. I have disabled the momory hole and Slack 12 installs now.

I would be laughing, singing and drinking and joking normally, were it not for the cloud of shame that hangs over my head. Oh, what a disgrace.
So thanks to all of you who helped or put up with me - I very much appreciate it.
Also, a super thankyou w1k0, who seemed to never give up the search for the resolution of this oddity even though he knew what a total knob i was. Beat that! What a diamond.
