cant install FLASH plugin
 

Hi - just registered, so havnt looked around too much, but i did a quick search and found nothing that helped me anyways, so heres the problem:

I have Mandrake ver 8.2
I am using Mozilla 0.9.8. - yes its old, but im only just beginning folks ;)

I downloaded the FLASH plugin and saved it to the desktop: "install_flash_player_6_linux.tar.gz"

Points to remember:
I am a TOTAL NEWBIE
I have NO experience in Linux
I can just about open up the Command window (alt + F2)

When i try to "RUN" the command ./flashplayer-installer - all i get is an error message: "Unknown host" - what is the problem please ?

BTW - If your wondering why i am using Linux when i am a totall newbie - well, good question, but one answer is "im really sick and tired of M$".

I'm assuming you extracted it with either a gui extractor or the tar -zxvf command.

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly but you can download an rpm (search on google or rpmfind.net) which will usually make the process easier. I would usually recommend usually the gzipped source but sometimes I found I have weird errors when i try to compile and using the rpm usually installs flawlessly.

Also, I wanted to tell you that you can get to the console by going to "Terminals" in the menu (similar to the start menu in windows).

I would recommend moving to Mandrake Linux 9.1. I'm using it right now and I'm extremely happy with its ease of use and configurability.

If you don't find the rpm reply to this message and I will put it on my ftp for you.

Alright, do this

tar xzvf install_flash_player_6_linux.tar.gz

cd install_flash_player_6_linux //change the directory to
-where files were unzipped
./flashplayer-installer

Have fun!

@Riley - actually i just extracted it by double clicking the file - thanks for the tip about the newer version ;)

@Jatt_thugz - thx, that worked fine - i now have the plugin installed :)

I didnt realise you could navigate in the Terminal much the same as in DOS - this Linux is gonna be fun to work with :D

When you double click an archive I'm pretty sure it doesn't extract but you can right click and click extract here or something similar to extract the file without using tar -zxvf

also the z is for gzip
change the z to a j for bzip
and you can use the unzip command for .zip archives

As you correctly noted, i did just "click" the "install_flash_player_6_linux.tar.gz" file. It opened up the archived files in some kind of application and i could then chose where to extract the files to.

Im still thinking in "M$ terms" - sorry bout that :mad:

one thing you may need to bear in mind... I've tried flashplayer 6 in mozilla 0.9.8 and it causes segfaults... it works fine in mozilla 1.0 and above though
