Question Cant install AVG

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance as I'm new to Linux but I'm trying to install AVG 9 free edition on pclinux 2009 but when I try to install it via the setup.exe file it asks: open with: and lists, internet, more applications, multimedia, office and system with all their sub folders! Shouldn't the file open and run automatically live in windows or do I need to install some other program to run this type of file?

You do not install Linux programs using .exe files. Linux doesn't even understand what ".exe" is.

Linux software is installed as "packages", they basically contain files and instructions about where to put them. A program called a "package manager" automatically downloads and installs them on command. Different distros use different package formats and package managers.

And AFAIK anti-virus software isn't necessary in Linux.

It sounds like you downloaded a windows installer program. Look in your package manager for a Linux antivirus package. It may have "antivir-avguard" available. There are others as well, and I would recommend rkhunter or chkrootkit to search for root kits and notify you of potential configuration errors. AVG and others are meant to be used mainly with e-mail or samba to prevent passing malware on to Windows computers on your LAN.

You cannot execute .exe files in Linux. It simply does not understand them.

There's a program called WINE that understands exe files and traslates it's Windows calls to Linux calls, but I only recommend you use it if there is no equivalent Linux program!

Have you Tried ClamAV? It does the same thing.
