If you chose your hardware wisely, wireless networking on linux is just as easy to deal with as on Windows. Some wireless cards are supported out of the box, especially on the forthcoming 7.10 release of Ubuntu. It is hardware vendors that are the problem when it comes to wireless on Linux, not the operating system itself...

...heard that wireless networking in Linux is a pain in the ***t!!!
Not my experience.... I have a sony vaio laptop. I usually keep it in my office where it plugs into my network.
One day I was using it in the kitchen, (no network cable), and absent-mindedly went off to google to find something out. Got my answer from google, then remembered I was not plugged into my network.
"WTF?". I don't even have wireless! But it turned out that one of my neighbours did, and kubuntu not only found it, but set itself up to connect to it.
I used their connection now and then for a couple of months (even rebooted their modem once, when it had lost the connection), then got myself a proper wireless router, (and secured my connection with WPA).
My wireless controller is "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05)" It could not have been easier to set up
