Cant find downloaded programs on Ubuntu 12.10
 

I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a PC that was running Windows XP. It almost ground to a halt with XP so I removed it. I have now downloaded a number of programs from Ubuntu software centre but apart from the programs shown on the Launcher I have been unable to open any of them. Can you help please? Is it possible to show the program icons on the desktop or add them to the Launcher? This may seem a daft question but I cant seem to open them. There doesn't seem to be a menu of loaded programs. Thanks
