Cant find downloaded programs on Ubuntu 12.10

I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a PC that was running Windows XP. It almost ground to a halt with XP so I removed it. I have now downloaded a number of programs from Ubuntu software centre but apart from the programs shown on the Launcher I have been unable to open any of them. Can you help please? Is it possible to show the program icons on the desktop or add them to the Launcher? This may seem a daft question but I cant seem to open them. There doesn't seem to be a menu of loaded programs. Thanks

May be the programs you installed are to be started with a command in a terminal ?

Command line programs usually have no launcher in the "Menu".
Like most of the "2000" commands in /usr/bin/ : No launchers.

Please specify a few examples of those programs.

Make sure the program was successfully installed by opening the software center and searching for the program you have downloaded. If it gives you the option to remove the program, then you are certain that it is installed. If it still gives you the option to install it, then do that now.
Since you have upgraded from Windows, press the Windows or Super key on your keyboard to open the dash.
Then start typing the name of the program that you installed, or the file type that is associated with it and it should appear in the search results. Select the program from that list to start it.
After you have accessed the program you can simply right click on the icon that is on the side of the screen and select the option to lock it to the launcher panel.

Hope this helps

Smile Thanks

Thank very much, I thought it would be something quite simple but I just couldn't see it.
