Cant even make it past boot :(

I am a long time windows user and am getting sick of giving microsoft my money. I figured I would give linux a try but have had nothing problems. I have tried the install in 2 differnt machines. A dell desktop and a Conpaq nx6110 laptop. I have tried 3 distros of linux and had the same result all three times on the 2 differnt machines. Distros are Knoppix, mandrake and Foresight

Nx6110 - Burned the iso to a bootable CD. I try to boot to the CD. I get a few lines of code after I tell the machine to boot to the CD and then the screen goes black. This happens the same way with all three distros.

Dell Desktop - Burned the ISO's to a bootable CD. After I boot to the CD i get a bunch of lines of text and then I get a text prompt. The same files show up regardless of which distro im trying. The only file I can actully execute is a file calle WWBMU which seems to be a partioning program however its written in german. The same thing happens with all three distros.

Can anyone offer me any assistance? If i can't figure this out soon im going to have to pull the plug on my little linux trip

Don't feel bad! I've had people needing a boot floppy for something and I tell them about a site like and then they come back and say "I put the file on a disk but it didn't work"
