Cant dial up to the internet

Hi ,
I am running Mandrake 9.1 in my home computer and i use a dial up connection .Luckily my Conexant modem has a linux driver which i have installed and the hardware cobnfiguration wizard is able to detect the modem.so does the Network configuration wizzard.I configured my dial up connection and everything was ok till here. But when i dial up using KPPP the log shows its dialing ,but its not dialing the phone at all.The dial just keeps failing .So i guess there should be some configuration to be done ,as my modem is not able to dial the phone. The modem works fine in windows though.
I would be really grateful if somebody could help me out.as its kindanagging to switch to windows everytime when i want to connect to the web
thanks

ok, first how did you selected the driver for your modem?
did you use the automatic modem detection software that you can find on the linux conexant website?
if yes are you sure that the modem detected was either hsf or hcf, my modem was probed to be one of them, so I had to install both drivers to see which one worked.
second, you need an init string for your modem, mine is AT&F&D0&K3&Q5S0=0
but you should verify that it is the one you need, some websites have a whole bunch of them so you should be able to find one easily using google

Hi,
I am running MandrakeLinux9.1 in my Pentium4 2.2 Ghz system(with a dual boot) .It has a Conexant modem that works good in windows, but not in linux. The modem listing tool identified my conexant HSF modem and for the version of my kernel (as shown by uname -r) i installed the
hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt03091600free_k2.4.21_0.13mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm.zip driver .hsfconfig ran without errors and /dev/modem pointed to /dev/ttySHSF0. lsmod listed the modem and dmesg did not show any kernel errors. So ran kpppd dial up tool and it detected the modem .I set up the account and dialed. The log windows shows that its dialling but i cant hear any ring tones and not even in the phone. My sound card is configured and and Ln and Mn settings are with values L1 M1.So its something wrong as i cant hear any dialling even in the phone.
But the only think i noted was that the modem was not listed when i used the hardware listing tool in Mandrake Control Center. It showed an unknown device in the PCI belong to communications group.
I am desperate because i have to switch to windows everytime to connect to the net.I would be really grateful and very very happy if you could clear me this problem

About the installation string i tried that and its the same

thank you very much

I had the same problem with a winmodem. I tried the mdk rpm's, generic i386 rpm's and even the src.rpm. All would install ok, but wouldn't dial out. So as a last resort, I used the tar.gz files and "rolled my own". It was the only way I got it to work.
